NOW IS THE TIME
by Mark O’Connor

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) 2006 Conference slogan NOW IS THE TIME summed up a feeling felt by most attendees regarding the current legislative agenda, as it affects American and Israeli interests. Israel and American face a common enemy in terrorism and Congressional action and legislation can make a difference. Three key Congressional initiatives that are endorsed strongly by AIPAC are limitation of Iran’s nuclear ambitions; isolation of a Hamas-backed Palestinian Authority, and continued financial support for Israel’s self-defense and for its economic growth.
Iran’s nuclear ambitions have been limited to a degree by the Iran Libya Sanctions Act (ILSA) of 1997. AIPAC and its volunteers seek support for the Iran Freedom Support Act in addition to continuing the existing ILSA restraints on trade with Iran or companies that do business with Iran. ILSA will shut down any investment in Iran by US companies. ILSA will stop the majority of companies that do business with Iran from doing business in the United States. The Iran Freedom Act, which will be part of the ILSA revisions, provide for support of pro democratic ideals within Iran.
AIPAC is urging passage of the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006 that would limit aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA), banning direct aid and providing only humanitarian assistance. The Hamas controlled PA must recognize Israel’s right to exist and renounce all forms of violence and terrorism for any other aid to even be considered.
The Bush administration has requested $2.46 billion in assistance for Israel for FY 2007 as part of our country’s annual Foreign Aid Bill. These funds will help promote vital American interests in the Middle East by keeping our only democratic ally in the region strong and secure against enemies seeking its destruction. AIPAC has been lobbying actively for passage of this year’s Foreign Aid Bill.
The Jewish community in every part of the United States must become more active and more vocal in its support for Israel. One important way to do so is by becoming involved with AIPAC. Ten of us participated in this year’s AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, and participated there with 5,000 others in the lobbying efforts mentioned above. We are all returning next year. Please speak with Rabbi Jeret if you are interested in becoming involved.

WHY EACH OF US SHOULD CONSIDER GOING TO AIPAC'S ANNUAL POLICY CONFERENCE IN MAY 2009
By Rabbi Isaac Jeret

Dear Friends:

For an ever-growing number of people associated with our community, participation in our congregation's annual delegation to AIPAC's Annual Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. has developed into a primary expression of their support for the State of Israel. As I write this column, we have, forty-four people registered as part of our delegation to this year's conference. Continued>
